Vinton - Bernice Willford Garwood, 87, died early Monday moring, Apirl 8, 1991, at Virginia Gay Hospital, Vinton, following an extended illness.
She was born January 5, 1904, at Blairstown, to Carl and Sylvia (Brody) Willford.
June 17, 1920, she married Charles J Garwood and the couple farmed in the Shellsburg and Vinton area until Mr. Garwoods's death September 3, 1959.
Mrs. Garwood was a member of the First Christian Church in Vinton, the Urbana Leisure club and the Vinton American Legion Auxiliary Unit # 57. She was a faithful employee of Virginia Gay Hospital for over 20 yers prior to her retirement.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Viroqua, Dale and Blanche and Bert an Dwyn, all of Vinton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Glenn Anderson, and Martha and Glenn Davis, all of Vinton; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Martha Luken, Dixie Kelty, Alice Kramer and Virginia Willford, all of Urbana.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Helen Willford Martinec and Abbie Willford Bennett.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am Wednesday, April 10, at the First Christian Church in Vinton with Rev. David A Vernon officiating. Private committal services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton prior to the memorial service.
Friends may call at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vonton from 4 to 8 pm Tuesday where thee casket will be open for viewing. A memorial fund has been established.
